Manuel Antonio National Park, in the Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio, is a small National Park in theCentral Pacific Conservation Area. Established in 1972 with an area enumerating 4,014 acres (16.24 km2) (the smallest of any Costa Rican national park), it is the destination of as many as 150,000 visitors annually and well-known for its beautiful beaches and hiking trails. In 2011, Manuel Antonio was listed by Forbes among the world’s 12 most beautiful national parklocated on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, just south of the city of Quepos, Puntarenas, and 132 km (82 mi) from the national capital of San José.
For those who love the ocean, the Manuel Antonio and Quepos area offers some extremely good waves in Costa Rica, making it a true paradise for surfers and beach enthusiasts alike. From the long, rideable waves of Playa Espadilla, perfect for beginners and casual surfers, to the more powerful breaks near Quepos that challenge seasoned riders. Quepos offers diverse surfing, with the Quepos Rivermouth providing large, fast lefts during big swells, while Playa Biesanz offers easier waves for beginners near the famous Manuel Antonio National Park. For a more adventurous experience, the remote Isla Damas has powerful, hollow right-breaking waves accessible by boat. The prime surf season in the Quepos/Manuel Antonio area is generally from May to November.
Playitas offers both left and right breaks over a rocky bottom, which can be best surfed at mid to high tide when the swells are large. The beach is only a short walk from Manuel Antonio National Park and offers several peaks, including two peaks on either end of the beach and two peaks in between.
Before the construction of the quite large Pez Vela Marina, Quepos Jetty would dish out a point-like wave that would peel into the river mouth. Today, after the construction and despite fears that the marina would destroy the wave, there is a “new” wave produce by the marina harbour sea wall and the river mouth produce a fun wave that, when waist to chest high is a good for longboards (slow and mushy). Bigger swells produce fast peeling waves with barrel sections. It works best with big south to west swells at lower tides.
A spot offshore, south of the jetty is Quepos Bombie. It is a submerged slab that produces waves with big swells. It is occasionally good for tow-in.
Playa el Rey is a pretty isolated beach located south of Manual Antonio about 8-10 km near the Rio Naranjo rivermouth. It produces pretty fair quality left and right peaks. It closes out when it gets big.
As at most beaches in Costa Rica, camping is allowed but you will have to bring in all your supplies.
